It has been a very hectic and weird day. Today the people of Thebes and its leaders came to my husband regarding the plague that has fallen upon us. It is a horrifying and sickening thought that the people of my city are losing their crops and their children and wives are dying. It was an understatement when the priest told Oedipus "Thebes is dying." (31.) I have seen the citizens with my own eyes and it is a horrible site. Although we are being hit by this plague, I do not understand why the people come to my husband. I understand that he is their king but he is human just like them. I fear for my husband, but I am confident that he can help us. Today, Oedipus and Creon got into an argument. It breaks my heart to see them fighting. I believe that my brother just wants to help him. Can you believe that my husband thinks that he wants to take the crown away from him? I just don't understand where he would get that from. Just because my brother and Tiresias have known each other for a long time, does not mean that they have united to ruin Oedipus. Tiresias is a liar but that has nothing to do with my brother! I cannot believe that he told my husband, "You are the curse, the corruption of the land." (401.) I simply don't understand. I remember the prophecy that was told to my husband a long time ago about our son and Oedipus could not be the killer. I am sure. Prophecies are just lies told by the gods and their priest to miniplate our lives. Laius and I got rid of our son by sending him away to get killed. My biggest worry is that Oedipus might be overthinking this whole sitution. He seemed troublesome when i said to him, "But Laius, so the report goes at least, was killed by strangers, thieves, at a place where three roads meet. . ." (788-790.) I am fearful that he will discover something that will be the doom the my family and city. I pray to the gods that everything works out in our favor. I shall go do as I was told and send to the shepherd at once.
Sincerly,
Jocasta
